OEA Representative Assembly Delegates from 25 SEOEA locals and retired were elected to attend the OEA representative Assembly held May 8-9 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus. There were 1,123 registered delegates at this Representative Assembly. Speakers Governor Ted Strickland discussed his plan for education and Substitute House Bill 1, as passed by the Ohio House of Representatives. Other speakers included the 2009 Teacher of the Year, the 2009 Career-Technical National Teacher of the Year and the 2009 ESP of the year. OEA President Pat Frost Brooks and OEA Executive Director Larry Wicks also addressed the assembly. FCPE Contributions SUMMARY OF ACTIONS 1. Elected: · Jim Timlin, Secretary-Treasurer (by acclamation; 3-year term) · Andre Taylor, NEA Director #5 (by acclamation; 3-year term) · Michael Jordan, NEA Director #6 (by acclamation; 3-year term) · Gretchen Washington, Board of Director At-Large (by acclamation; 3-year term) 3. Approved the appointment of Pam Ennis to the OEA Appeals Board for a seven-year term ending August 31, 2016. 4. Approved New Business Item #1: The Ohio Education Association endorses Substitute House Bill 1, as passed by the Ohio House of Representatives, and further directs the OEA officers, Board of Directors and staff to: o provide a comprehensive effort to communicate the value of this legislation, o seek member engagement, support and advocacy to promote its passage, o work with state and local leaders and major partners to build public support, o use OEA's full capacity for advocacy in order to maintain and improve provisions of the legislation, as well as to secure its passage and adoption as law, and o safeguard OEA priorities and policies as the legislation is implemented at the state and local level. 5. Defeated New Business Item #2: The OEA cut the budget by a minimum of 5% across the board. These 5 plus percent monies will be distributed proportionately to our local association presidents on a per member basis. Constitution Articles The following Constitution articles were read by title for amendment at the Fall 2009 RA: Article I - Names, Goals and Objectives, and Authorities for Governance; Article II - Membership; Article III - Governance Structure; Article IV - Representative Assembly; Article V - Board of Directors; Article VI - Officers; Article VII - Appeals Board; Article VIII - Committees; Article IX - Affiliates; Article X - Amendment to the Constitution and Bylaws. OEA Members and Delegates Attend Rally At the OEA RA lunch break May 9 delegates had the opportunity to attend Ohio's Revival: Reforming Education for the 21st Century Economy, a rally that took place on the west lawn of the Schottenstein Center. Members showed up in large numbers to support Governor Ted Strickland's push to overhaul Ohio's public education curriculum and funding system. Gov. Strickland was joined by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and other top education officials at the rally.
